How does the household food disposer work

The food waste decomposer does not have blades but instead makes use of impellers.

You have to mount the impellers on the spinning plate which uses centrifugal force to push particles of food waste against a grind ring which is stationary.

The food wastes are then broken down into fine particles to the extent of making them turn into liquid.

The particles are flushed out by the running water through the grind chamber out of the disposer and then down the drain.  Drain water from the dishwasher also goes through the garbage disposal for any large particles to be ground up before reaching the drainpipe.

The liquid then flows to your septic system or a wastewater treatment plant. A garbage disposal mounted under the sink drain grinds the food scraps that are fed down the pipe using a heavy flow of water.

Food waste in the Food Waste Decomposer

The Food Waste Decomposer uses a series of processes where microorganisms break down materials that are biodegradable in the presence of oxygen.

The processes in the decomposer result in the reduction of waste by 95% through evaporation of water and discharge carbon dioxide. The 5% that remains is converted into compost. Composting of food waste takes approximately 12 to 24 hours. For best performance, mix a variety of food wastes rather than using a single type of food waste.

On the other hand, cooked food decomposes faster; a complete cycle takes approximately 10 -12 hours. For raw food wastes such as meat, fish, eggshell, bones, seafood, etc., the cycle takes a bit longer.

Be informed that the more the raw food wastes, the longer the decomposing process; more so if red meat and poultry are in the mixture.

For fertilizer use, a mixture of both the raw and cooked food waste is used as it gives the best results.

The following materials cannot compose therefore should not be added to the mixture in the decomposer.

  • Hard materials such as beef and pork bones, rib bones and seashells
  • Wood materials such as wood chips, twigs, and dead leaves
  • Salty substance like marinating sauce, soy sauce, dipping sauces, greasy food scraps
  • Liquid hogwash, grease, cooking oil

How to make organic fertilizer.

The composting material from the decomposer is usually acidic, thus not suitable to be used directly to the plants. Give it some time to mature fully into an organic fertilizer. Depending on the weather conditions, it takes at least 1-2 months for the compost to cure.

For Matured compost, the texture should be loose, and granulated. It should also have an earthy aroma. In case it still has foul odors or pungent smell, then it is not yet mature.

It is difficult to know when the compost is ready; you need to be turning it over, and over again. Through continuous turning, you will be able to see when it is dry.

Organic fertilizer has very rich nutrients required by the plants. You have to mix it with the soil. The ratio varies from plant to plant.
