Commercial food waste disposer

Commercial food waste disposer

It is an electronic device used for shredding waste food product. The machines come in different models so choosing the best depends on your usage. Below is an overview of how the device works.

It has a high rated motor for domestic units. The motor spins circular turntable mounted horizontally. Induction motors rotate at 1,400 to 1,800 rpm. Usually, there is a rubber closure on the top of the disposal to prevent food waste from flying back. Its other use is to attenuate noise from the grinding chamber.

There are two types of garbage disposers, batch feed, and continuous feed models. Continuous feed is used to feed waste after being started while batch feed unit is used by placing waste before beginning the shredding process.

Batch feeds are faster because the top of disposal is covered. The reason for this is that it prevents foreign objects from falling in.

The device may jam, but the problem is solved by forcing the turntable round from above.  Another problem that could occur is blockage of the drain caused by shredded waste.

There is some automatic jam-clearing feature where the motor rotates on the opposite side from the previous. This helps minor problems when each tie it started.

You can still purchase other machines such as water pressure or electronic disposer.

The water operating disposer helps in shredding high fibrous waste. The only demerit is that it takes longer to shred and requires high water pressure.

Requirements for waste disposer

  • You need a 90mm sinkhole
  • If your sink is more than 20mm thick, you will have to extend sink flange
  • A 13amp socket which should be under the sink
  • Lastly, you need a spur switch on the wall to turn the machine on and off.

Benefits of food waste disposer

Reducing food waste can help mitigate the level of climate change. About 19million, tons of food wastes go to landfills each, year. Once in landfills, it emits methane and carbon monoxide gases.

With the usage of food disposer, you will reduce the amount of food in landfills thus no gases emitted. The plastic bags will decrease, and businesses reduce their cost.

These foul gases produce energy, power, and electricity at water treatment plant.  The gas is captured as recycling goes on and generates power for the facility.

Around 40% of the food goes to waste; it’s advised to remove the remains from the kitchen and business places. The food waste shredding helps manage sewage processes since much waste product does not find their way to pipes. The sewerage can later be treated and processed into water that meets national third emission standards.

It helps reduce the health hazards since continuous waste leads to bacteria developments. Food disposer enables you to reduce the waste and keep your kitchen clean. The solid landfills are converted to organic fertilizer used by farmers.

Different types of commercial disposer

  • ½ HP motor size

Some places have less amount of food waste compared to others. The amount of food shredding required in such places is low and hence the need to buy the small disposer. Examples of such places are coffee shops and convenient stores.  This type fits your workplace since less power is required.

  • 1-3 HP motor size

The motor is not too big or small hence it is perfect for kitchen use. With three horsepower, many consider it good enough for households. Even though it may appear significant, it is usually silent and has 7525RPM with nickel cutting blades.

  • 5-10 HP motor size

These disposers have the huge horsepower of more than five. They are mainly used in hotels, buildings that have huge wastes. It can destroy up to 2,500 metals at a go and weighs more than 140pounds.  These metals comprise of lead and other heavy metals. It also does not contain toxic and hazardous substances.

What not to grind

  • Non-food items

When plates and utensils pile up, a fork can easily slip into your garbage; before you grind, always clear all the dishes and check to see if any non-food item has fallen.

  • Grease

When grease cools, it solidifies inside the drainage system. Clogs start to appear, for this reason, avoid oils and fats.

  • Bones

Fish bones are not a problem, but bones challenge the industrial disposal unit.

  • Fibrous food

Potato peelings, asparagus, artichokes, and kale are not allowed on the sink. They can easily entangle the blades causing it to jam.

Environmental impact

Food waste disposal increases the load of organic carbon. This leads to increased consumption of oxygen. However, if wastewater treatment is controlled, the organic carbon in the food will help bacteria decomposition. This increases carbon as an inexpensive and continuous source of necessity to biological nutrients.

If you use the food disposer, there is minimal of total biosolids byproducts from the treatment of sewerage. There is also low impact on handling processes as the high volatile solids from food waste yield minimum amounts of solid.

Food waste produces three times the amount of biogas produced from anaerobic digestion.

The food waste disposal has many impacts. It is affordable and straightforward since the demand has led to an increase in t’s production. If you are purchasing a new sink, it could be useful to add the disposer. Remember the models may vary on cost and functionality. Finally, the device has both economic and environmental impact, and many experts agree it’s worth purchasing.
